Choice of PLD offered to HCI High School Students

Windows-based Personal Learning Device (with Touchscreen and Stylus)

As part of the Ministry of Education’s Personal Learning Device Programme (PDLP), our school has selected a Windows-based laptop with a touchscreen and stylus as your child’s Personal Learning Device (PLD). This decision was made to provide students with a reliable, versatile tool that supports their daily learning needs. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Critical for Online and Classroom Learning:
In today’s educational environment, a personal learning device is essential. Students will use their PLDs daily in a range of activities—including online Home-Based Learning sessions and in-class lessons. The Windows platform supports the programming tools and specialized applications required in our curriculum, ensuring stable performance wherever learning takes place. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Benefits of a Stylus and Full-Sized Keyboard:
This device combines the flexibility of a tablet with the functionality of a traditional laptop. The touchscreen and stylus make it convenient for taking handwritten notes, annotating documents, drawing diagrams, and working through math problems. Meanwhile, the full-sized keyboard supports efficient typing for essays, presentations, and coding. By having both options in one device, students can easily switch input methods to match the task at hand, enhancing productivity and engagement. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Future-Ready for A-Level eExams:
The education landscape is evolving, and many A-Level exams will be conducted electronically (eExams) using Windows laptops. Introducing a Windows device now helps students gain proficiency with the operating system and required software early on. We have selected a relatively high-specification model to ensure it remains fast and functional over several years. With proper care and maintenance, this PLD could continue to serve students well in JC1 and JC2, potentially eliminating the need for another device purchase later. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Consistency and Proven Success with Windows Devices
Our school has consistently used Windows-based laptops for all students since the start of the PDLP, and this approach has been highly effective. Teachers can design digital lessons with confidence, knowing every student has the same platform and software environment. The IT support team is well-versed in managing Windows devices, which means technical assistance is timely and efficient. Even for students who are new to the Windows platform, peer support and a shared system help everyone adapt quickly. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Our Preferred Device -  Lenovo 2-in-1 Laptop
After evaluating various Windows options, we have chosen a Lenovo 2-in-1 model (featuring both laptop and tablet functionality) as this year’s PLD. Lenovo’s ThinkPad series has proven reliable and robust in previous years. The selected model offers higher-end specifications—such as a fast processor, ample RAM, and sufficient storage—to handle most educational tasks seamlessly. We are confident it will meet the school’s needs and support a smooth learning experience for your child. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Flexibility for Personal Purchases

Parents may choose not to purchase the PLD through the school and instead buy a suitable device elsewhere, though such purchases are not eligible for the use of Edusave.

Any PLD used in school must have the Device Management Application (DMA) installed, as required by the Ministry of Education. This application ensures a safe, focused learning environment by managing app installations and enforcing cyber wellness settings during school hours. The device must meet the minimum software and hardware specifications, and preferably includes touchscreen and stylus, which will need to be verified by our IT department.

While we allow this flexibility, we encourage selecting the standard school-issued model for the best alignment with our programmes and easier technical support. ___________________________________________________________________________________________

By providing students with a high-quality Windows-based PLD featuring touchscreen and stylus capabilities, we aim to equip them with the tools and skills needed for success. This approach builds on our proven experience and ensures your child has a reliable, versatile companion in their learning journey—now and in the years to come.
